Meet the team: Kent

Ever wonder what the RedBrick team is really like? To us, it’s important to get to know the members of your community on more than just a first-name basis. We want to build strong, meaningful relationships with those we work and live with, and to us, that starts with a conversation. So, we sat down and decided to explain a little bit about who we are as people, and more than just a job title. Ready to meet the team? We can’t wait to meet you, too.

Meet Kent:

Hey there, I’m Kent Small. I’m the project and construction manager here at RedBrick. Basically, it’s my job to take a project from the idea stage and turn it into something that’s constructible. How do I make that happen? I work through something called the design phase, which is where I work with consultants to get the project through permitting and approvals until we are able to create something that is affordable and buildable. The construction management side of my job is taking that design, implementing it and building it on site. It’s at this stage where I work with the client, suppliers and trades to make sure the project is exactly how everyone envisioned it by the time of completion.

I love my job, I really do. My favourite part is getting to see projects from when they’re an idea on a piece of paper and watching them grow up until the final stage of a fully operational unit. Back when I was a consultant, I didn’t get to experience being a part of the entire process. In consulting, you’re involved in the design phase but you’re usually only involved for a portion of it. You get the site development process in place and then you don’t see anything until the building is complete, so you miss out on watching the project grow. I’m really fortunate to be able to become a part of that whole process now, because actually getting to see something being created from start to finish and getting to impact how it turns out is really cool.

I love being able to work with new talent and innovative people within my field, so I’m really looking forward to getting the opportunity to grow a construction and project management team with RedBrick. New ideas and points of view are what keep RedBrick constantly moving forward, so it’ll be very exciting to bring new people onboard who share those same values. For me, getting to be a part of RedBrick’s growth is going to be one of the most interesting parts of the next couple years. I’m also very excited to watch the vision of some of our larger projects reach completion and see everything we’ve all been working so hard for finally become a reality. Some of these projects have been quite a long journey, so it’ll be great to watch that journey come full circle and allow these projects to start a new journey as a functional unit.

Something you might not know about me is even when I’m not working, I’m probably still working. I still actively farm up in Grande Prairie, so I spend a lot of my vacation time doing farm work instead of kicking back and relaxing. It’s an opportunity for me to decompress and get away from the computer, so I really enjoy it. Farming is a part of who I am, it always has been, so it’s not something I can or would ever want to let go of. I really enjoy getting back to my roots.

Looking into RedBrick’s future, I’m excited to see where the next few years will take us. We’ve spent the last two years trying to get to a point where we can grow as a company and it’s been a bit of a grind, but I think now we’re at a point where that’s starting to happen. I’m looking forward to helping the team grow, constantly keeping our projects innovative and beginning new and interesting projects. It’s only going to keep getting better around here, and I’m very thankful to be a part of this process.

That’s all for now, chat again soon.

All the best,

ks.
